Chisinau, 29 July /MOLDPRES/ - The government of Romania is looking for solutions to help Moldova in the context of the energy crisis. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis today made statements to this effect at a joint news conference with his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu, on an official visit to Romania.

Romania’s head of state gave assurances that his country would provide support to Moldova in the crisis situations. ‘’Presently, Moldova is particularly vulnerable and the residents feel the shock of the increase in prices for gas and electric energy. We reviewed the options of support at the bilateral level. The government further looks for solutions to provide support in the context of the energy crisis. Decision-makers discuss the possibilities of the Iasi-Chisinau gas pipeline, as well as other means of providing assistance through all leverages we avail of. I assure you that we will not abandon Moldova. We want the current crises to be overcome, so that the authorities continue the process of reformation, modernization and European integration,’’ Klaus Iohannis said.

For her part, President Maia Sandu asked for the purchasing of gas from Romania. ‘’We want this as soon as possible so that we make sure that our people will not freeze in winter. For five months, the war in Ukraine has thrown our region in uncertainty. I mean the record inflation, the energy sector weakened, and farmers who lost the sales market from the east. The combination of crises is a heavy burden for my country, a burden which we cannot carry alone; therefore, we need help. At the same time, the state’s institutions keep a close eye on the situation in the Transnistrian region and analyze all risks,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The officials also appreciated the high-level bilateral relations and the support provided by Romania in the carrying out of social projects. President Maia Sandu thanked Romania for the support provided in the process of giving Moldova the status of country candidate for accession to EU. ‘’I am sure that the dialogue between our institutions will be boosted even more, as Moldova advances towards the European integration. Romania’s experience will be useful. We thank you for having backed us in the European approach. Romania’s voice was strongly heard in Brussels,’’ the Moldovan head of state noted.

President Maia Sandu is on an official visit to Bucharest, at an invitation by Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis. During the visit, Maia Sandu will have discussions with Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania’s Parliament Marcel Ciolacu and Deputy President of the Senate Alina Gorghiu.
