Chisinau, Nov. 17 /MOLDPRES/- About 60 women from the districts of Nisporeni, Călărași, Basarabeasca, Leova, Dubăsari, Găgăuzia and the Transnistrian region obtained grants worth up to 4,400 dollars each to initiate economic activities resilient to climate change in their households. Yesterday, they received the grant certificates.
The beneficiaries were selected in the second round of the public competition organized by the Sustainable and resilient communities through empowering women project, funded by Sweden.
"These grants are just one of the tools through which the project gives women the opportunity to become agents of change in their communities, supporting smart climate change adaptation practices that also provide them with additional income," said Karin Borovic, head of section within the Swedish Embassy in Chisinau
Besides the grants, the women will also benefit for a year of business mentoring and training for the application of sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices, the use of green energy and energy efficient technologies, etc. In this way, they will be able to successfully launch or develop businesses in various fields, such as beekeeping, animal and bird breeding, manure management, growing and processing medicinal plants, growing vegetables in greenhouses, and other economic activities that generate income and resilience to climate and economic crises.
"Actions are needed that will help increase women's access to alternative income-generating activities, as well as knowledge and information on the sustainable and resilient management of the natural and agricultural resources they depend on. This is even more relevant in the context where, globally, women-led businesses receive only 1-3% of the funding dedicated to adaptation actions to climate change", said Silvia Pana-Carp, program coordinator at UNDP Moldova.
