Chisinau, Nov. 23 /MOLDPRES/- In 2023, the European Investment Bank (EIB) will make new investments aimed at key sectors of the Moldovan economy, including investments in transport, energy and health projects. EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska made the statement at the third ministerial conference of the Moldova Support Platform.

According to the official, the support will help our country mitigate the economic and social effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and support Moldova's accession to the European Union.

"The EIB will continue to contribute to an economically strong and energy independent Moldova. So far, we have done this by investing €280 million and mobilizing another €16 million in grants for public and private sector projects in 2022 alone. Next year, our priority will be investment in the energy and transport sectors , which will help Moldova to achieve energy independence and continue the path of integration into the EU. We also intend to support projects in the field of medical assistance that ensure access to high-quality medical services. During the meeting of the Moldova Support Platform in Paris, we informed our partners about these plans and sent a very clear message - Moldova can still count on the EIB", said Teresa Czerwińska.

EU Ambassador to Chisinau Jānis Mažeiks said that the EU will unify efforts with the EIB to provide support to the Republic of Moldova in the current energy crisis situation.

"To date, the EU has provided EUR 64 million in non-reimbursable funds for joint EU-EIB initiatives. For the coming period, the EU has already announced support of 250 million euros, of which 50 million euros will be directed to the country's budgetary assistance, necessary to overcome the winter period. In addition, the European Union is committed to supporting Moldova in connecting the transport infrastructure to the TEN-T. In the immediate period, the EU will offer a grant of 20 million euros for the rehabilitation of the railways, will facilitate the participation of the Republic of Moldova in the Transport Community Treaty and will help the country to develop its national mobility strategy", said Jānis Mažeiks.

In 2023, the EIB expects to provide loans, in combination with support in the form of grants and technical assistance, in the amount of approximately EUR 150-170 million. The support provides for the financing of projects that focus on energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, respond to the country's needs in the health and digitalization sectors, and pursue investments in the agri-food sector.

The European Investment Bank has been operating in the Republic of Moldova since 2007. So far, the EIB has invested over 1 billion euros in 26 projects throughout the country.
