Cross-border cooperation to be developed under Interreg NEXT Romania-Moldova Program

Chisinau, Dec. 26 /MOLDPRES/- The European Commission has approved the Interreg NEXT Romania-Moldova 2021-2027 Program, which sees the allocation of 77 million euros for cross-border cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova in order to improve education, medical assistance and nature conservation.

Under the Program, activities will be financed from the policy objectives and the specific objectives of Interreg selected in working out the Program, following the analysis of the situation in the eligible area and the consultations carried out with the partner structures, as well as with the potential beneficiaries. They provide for Policy Objective 2 –  greener, resilient, low-carbon Europe; Policy objective 4 – more social and inclusive Europe; Interreg specific objective 1 – Better governance in cooperation; Interreg specific objective 2 – Enhancing Europe's safety and security.

The program will invest in the prevention and resilience of the risks of natural disasters, in the conservation of biodiversity, while contributing to the economic development of local communities. The Program will also invest in education and training (building or upgrading schools and universities, upgrading digital equipment). At the same time, the medical sector will be financed through investments in infrastructure and new state-of-the-art medical equipment. Finally, the program will invest in tourism and culture, improving access to historical monuments in the area.

The programming process for Interreg NEXT Romania-Moldova began with the establishment of the Joint Programming Committee and the approval of the program preparation methodology in September 2020. While working out the program, several consultations were held that involved national, regional authorities, local, public, economic and social partners, relevant bodies representing civil society, research institutions and universities.
