Chisinau, 15 January /MOLDPRES/ - National poet Mihai Eminescu today was paid homage in Chisinau on the occasion of his 173rd birthday anniversary. The event is part of a string of actions organized on the National Culture Day, marked on the same in Moldova as well.

On this occasion, representatives of the central and local public administration, politicians, writers, culture people, admirers of Eminescu’s works assembled at the bust to the poet on the Alley of Classics of the Romanian Literature from the Stefan cel Mare Public Garden.

A literary and artistic manifestation, as well as an event on evoking the poet’s personality, held by culture and art people, took place in the same location. In his speech, the president of the Moldovan Writers’ Union (USM), the event’s moderator Teo Chiriac said that the National Culture Day was identified with the birthday of the national poet, Mihai Eminescu. ‘’And it is only natural that the things are like this, as through his work, Eminescu synthesized the spiritual values of the Romanian nation. We came to this space, in order to lay living flowers at the statues to the great precursors, to pay them our homage. Mihai Eminescu is the model of our national culture and conscience. The true culture, arts and literature, in all their forms, go beyond the linguistic borders and barriers. The culture transcends not only the space, but also the time - it is like an ineffable rainbow, as a miraculous bridge which united the past, present and future,’’ the USM president said.

”My great wish is for us to manage this year to undertake steps in terms of public policies and to implement concrete actions, in order to enhance the cultural values in the country, as well as to improve the condition of the culture man in Moldova. And together to change the emphases as regards the nation’s moral and spiritual education…. Also for the wish of unity, in a world which is in continuous movement, we do our utmost to deposit the cultural values from the past in the collective memory and transmit them by legacy. It is difficult for one to create new works, if he/she did not receive through education what generations ‘’of your people’’ have left you. The art of the traditional shirt, an element of national identity on both banks of the Prut river, gave one of the greatest joys of the year, as it was included in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity on 1 December,’’ Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan said in his message.

Mihai Eminescu, regarded by the posthumous literary critique as the most important poet of the Romanian literature, was born in Botosani, Romania, on 15 January 1850. Eminescu died in Bucharest on 15 June 1889 and was buried at the Bellu Cemetery from Bucharest. On 28 October 1948, Mihai Eminescu was posthumously elected as member of the Romanian Academy.

The National Culture Day was established under a parliament decision from 2012, and is aimed at promoting the national culture, authentic cultural values, as well as the outstanding personalities from the culture sector.
