Foreign Minister received visit of British counterpart

Chisinau, March 16. /MOLDPRES/- The head of Moldovan diplomacy, Nicu Popescu today received the visit of his British counterpart, James Cleverly, the MAEIE press service has reported.

Foreign Minister of Great Britain announced a new package of financial support worth 10 million pounds, an amount that will go to projects aimed at good governance, economic development and energy sector.

Also, the officials discussed the stimulation of trade, the United Kingdom being among the top 10 economic partners of the Republic of Moldova.

"We propose to liberalize export tariffs for several Moldovan exports to Great Britain: apples, plums, grapes, cherries, juice, tomatoes and garlic. We have a strong partnership in IT, telecommunications and creative industries and we want to extend it to the car manufacturing, electronics, renewable energy, fintech and tourism industries," said Popescu.

At the same time, the officials discussed the promotion and signing of agreements for the mutual conversion of permits and reducing roaming charges, which will bring benefits to our diaspora.

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu said that the Chisinau authorities propose to boost cooperation with Great Britain in fighting corruption and bringing to justice all those who harmed the state and our citizens. In this context, he welcomed the recent sanctions by Great Britain of the two Moldovan fugitives announced as international wanted.

Another topic discussed was the organization of the European Political Community summit, which will be hosted by Moldova on June 1, and the potential projects that could contribute to a more united and safer Europe.

The officials also referred to the situation in the region, reiterating the condemnation of the Russian Federation's brutal war against Ukraine. Popescu thanked Minister James Cleverly for the support that Great Britain offers to our country in efforts to counter the attempts to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. It includes the sharing of best practices in cyber security, the modernization of the security and defense sector and the consolidation of the Teleradio-Moldova company through a partnership with the British public television BBC.

“The relationship with the UK is important to building our country's resilience and we are delighted to continue to deepen it. Through the strong support we receive from the United Kingdom, we are progressing in our process of modernization and accession to the European Union, despite the challenges", Popescu also said.
