Moldovan parliament speaker has meeting with Council of Europe's Secretary General

Chisinau, 31 March /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today discussed with Council of Europe’s Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Buric, on a visit to Moldova. The officials paid special attention to the projects backed by the Council of Europe in Moldova, such as the justice reform, fighting corruption, money laundering, adjusting the legislation to the European standards, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.  

In the context, the speaker noted that the 30 March meeting of the parliament had been dedicated to the justice reform. The parliament appointed to office members non-judges of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) from among people who had passed the integrity evaluation; thus, the institution became functional. Other important laws voted on 30 March represent the reform of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) and the external evaluation of the candidates for the positions of CSJ judges. ‘’Even if resistance is still felt on behalf of the people from the system, I am confident that the honest judges will take courage and will de-block the processes in the justice sector,’’ Igor Grosu said.  

The parliament speaker expressed thanks for the recommendations received on behalf of the Venice Commission. Igor Grosu noted that Moldova had made progress in terms of combating the money laundering, in which the Council of Europe supported the country during more years. On 30 March, the parliament adopted a draft law on the virtual coins.     

The discussions referred also to the authorities’ efforts to strengthen the capacities   of more institutions, such as the Central Electoral Commission, Audiovisual Council and the Prosecutor’s Office. ‘’We have an ambitious parliament’s agenda; yet, we were assured that we would be backed to advance in the reformation and modernization of Moldova,’’ the parliament speaker added.
