Chisinau, 6 April /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has received on visit Secretary General of the Community of Democracies (CoD)Thomas E. Garrett, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.

The discussions’ agenda was focused on Moldova’s accession to CoD’s Governing Council, with the subject being a continuation of the dialogue held by Deputy PM Nicu Popescu in New York in September 2022, when Moldova was invited to join this platform.

„We spoke also about the efforts made by the authorities for the implementation of the reforms’ agenda and fighting corruption. I reconfirmed, on this occasion, our country’s commitment to promote the democratic values and the principle of transparency.

I appreciated the willingness of Secretary General Thomas E. Garrett to provide Moldova every assistance in the process of submitting the application on accession to CoD’s Governing Council. I stressed the importance of the joint efforts, in the context of the geopolitical changes in the region, as well as of our process of accession to EU,’’ Foreign Affairs Minister Nicu Popescu noted.

The Community of Democracies, set up in 2000, through the approval by 106 states, including Moldova, of the Warsaw Declaration, is a global intergovernmental coalition which backs the adhesion to the joint democratic values, principles and standards, contained in the statutory document. CoD is the amplest platform of discussion and exchange of experience in the democracy field globally. The advantage of this forum resides in the voluntary participation of states, which are encouraged and motivated to openly approach the challenges faced in the process of strengthening their own democracy.

The main decision-making body of CoD is the Governing Council, which is made up of 28 states at present (Argentina,  Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Norway, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Romania, Sweden, United States, Uruguay, United Kingdom).
