Law on Intelligence and Security Service subjects to public consultations in Moldova

Chisinau, 10 April /MOLDPRES/ - Public consultations on the draft law on the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) took place at the parliament’s headquarters today.   

According to the parliament’s communication and public relations department, MPs, representatives of SIS, Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Defence Ministry and civil society took part in the event, organized by the parliamentary commission for national defence and public order. The discussions were focused on the norms from the articles which establish the powers of SIS and of the institution’s director. The participants referred to each article separately and came up with proposals to give final touches to the document.         

The draft law on SIS was voted in parliament’s plenum in the first reading and was criticized by the opposition. The document’s goal is to ensure the independence of SIS’ activity, the revision of the mandate of the institution’s leadership, specification of the powers. The categories of deeds, risks and threats, which pose a special danger to the national security, are established in the document.     

The draft law on the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) is part of a package of laws which regards the work of SIS. The MPs also voted, in the first reading, the draft law on the counterintelligence activity and the external intelligence activity, as well as a draft law on the amendment of the law on the status of the intelligence and security officer.
