Chisinau, April 28 /MOLDPRES/- Nine years ago, on April 28, 2014, as a result of a long and complex process, the European Union abolished the short-stay visa requirement for citizens of the Republic of Moldova, holders of biometric passports, to travel in the Schengen area. The Republic of Moldova was the first country within the Eastern Partnership to obtain the visa-free regime with the European Union.

The liberalized visa regime with the EU represents one of the most tangible benefits of European integration for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova - freedom of movement. Visa-free travel significantly facilitated people-to-people contacts and contributed to the further strengthening of business, social and cultural ties between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.

On the 9th anniversary of the establishment of the liberalized regime of visas with the EU, the head of diplomacy of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, came with a message. "During this period of time, more than 2.4 million Moldovans traveled in the European space, having the opportunity to meet their friends and families or visit the tourist spots in the respective countries. At the same time, the liberalized visa regime offered new opportunities for the exchange of experience, knowledge and personal development and strengthened interpersonal, cultural and social ties between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union", said Popescu.

The possibility of traveling without visas is open to all citizens holding biometric passports, including those from the left side of the Dniester.
