Over 30,000 driver's licences of Moldova issued for residents of Transnistrian region

Chisinau, 2 May /MOLDPRES/ - Over 30,000 driver’s licences of Moldova were issued for residents from the Transnistrian region on the period January 2027 – March, this year.  

According to the Reintegration Policies Bureau, decision-makers register a continuous dynamic on the rise in terms of getting by residents from the Transnistrian region of driver’s licences of national model, based on the simplified mechanism of changing (applicable starting from May 2020, without taking additional exams), available for people with residence in the Transnistrian region, possessors of identity acts.   

Thus, during January 2027-March 2023, 30,386 driver’s licences of Moldova were issued based on this mechanism, of which 5,783 were issued in 2022 and 1,347 – in the first quarter of this year.

At the same time, according to the state register of transports, on the period, 1 September 2028 – 31 March 2023, 9,808 non-commercial vehicles from the Transnistrian region with neutral registration plates were documented at points of registration of transport means from the Tiraspol and Rabnita cities (6,829 in Tiraspol and 2,979 in Rabnita)   

Also, in the context of the restrictions maintained by Tiraspol at the providing of primary registration services, the same slow dynamic of registration with neutral places was noticed in the first quarter of the 2023 year (164 vehicles registered), just during the entire 2022 year (555 vehicles registered), unlike the 2021 year, when 4,780 transports units were registered. ‘’To overcome this situation, it is necessary that Tiraspol de-politicizes the technical issues, gives up the obligation for double registration or imposing to withdraw the neutral plates, makes progress in making uniform the standards and the fiscal and customs requirements applicable to the transport means from all over the country,’’ a press release by the Bureau reads.      

The mechanism of registration plates of neutral model does not replace the basic process, widely used by the residents of the region, concerning the registration with plates of national model. At the same time, the access to the international road traffic is accepted only in the conditions of the clear cut identification of the state Republic of Moldova, holding of driver’s licences of national type and other acts issued by the competent authorities/authorized institutions of Moldova.
