Moldovan president in Ottawa discusses regional security, challenges faced by Moldova, reforms' agenda

Chisinau, 12 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu is on an official visit to Canada. In Ottawa, the head of state had a string of meetings with high-ranking officials.    

According to the presidential press service, Maia Sandu met Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency Mary May Simon. The officials discussed the security environment in the region and how Moldova was hit by the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the measures of assisting the refugees, undertaken by the Moldovan government and how Canada can back these efforts in continuation.   

The head of state discussed also the reforms carried out by the governance, in order to strengthen the country’s democracy and economy. Maia Sandu highlighted the combating of corruption as priority and discussed the possible introduction of sanctions by Canada for the fled oligarchs, who stole money from the Moldovan citizens.     

President Maia Sandu had a meeting with Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons Anthony Rota. The head of state participated in a roundtable with the members of the Canada-Moldova parliamentary friendship group from the House of Commons and with representatives of more legislative commissions.  

At the same time, at the meeting with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, President Maia Sandu exchanged opinions with Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and National Defence Minister Anita Anand.  

The Moldovan president discussed also efforts of solidarity undertaken by Moldova ever since the beginning of the war, in order to help Ukraine. In the context, the head of state, along with Deputy Speaker Alexandra Mendès, inaugurated an exhibition of emotional photos at the headquarters of the Canadian parliament. The pictures show moments of management by Moldova’s government and the entire society of the flow of refugees from Ukraine.
