Chisinau, May 23 /MOLDPRES/- A company from the Republic of Moldova has recently delivered 20 tons of Moldovan Granny Smith apples to Sweden. The fruits will be sold in store chains and at local markets in the Scandinavian country.
According to the Moldova Fruct Association, the commercial partnership with the Swedish importer was established at the Freskon exhibition in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Sweden, like the rest of the Scandinavian countries, is dependent on the import of apples. The total value of Sweden's apple imports, at €89 million in 2020, is higher than that of most European countries. In the absence of substantial local production, apple imports are relatively stable. Almost 80% of apples consumed are imported. Most apples come from European countries, but there are also off-season imports, mainly from Chile and New Zealand, as well as growing imports from Ukraine.
If in 2020 Moldovan apples were exported to 11 countries, last year they reached 30 destinations. At the beginning of this year, the first container of Moldovan apples from last year's harvest arrived in India.
