Dniester Day to be celebrated in Moldova on 28 May

Chisinau, May 26 /MOLDPRES/- Celebrated on the last Sunday in May every year, Dniester Day is one of the most important events, emphasizing the importance of the river as the main water artery of the Republic of Moldova. The celebration of this year's Dniester Day, on May 28, is organized under the slogan "The river that unites us" and foresees several events, which everyone is invited.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, in order to improve water quality and sustainable and efficient management of the Dniester river basin, by Government decision, the Management Plan of the Dniester hydrographic district was approved, through which an important step was taken towards the implementation of the basin management principle. Also, the elaboration of the II cycle of the Management Plan of the Dniester hydrographic basin district is initiated.

"Currently, more than ever, we are responsible for taking all actions for the protection of the Dniester river, to ensure its sustainable management, clean waters and an unpolluted environment", estimates the main environmental authority in our country.

Dniester supplies about 80% of the country's population and 99% of the population of Chisinau with drinking water.

The Dniester river basin has a social, historical-cultural importance, as well as a vital role in providing quality water for the needs in agriculture, industry, in maintaining the ecological balance and, in general, in the sustainable development of the Republic of Moldova. The Dniester River is of considerable transboundary importance, a fact confirmed by the Helsinki Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.
