Azerbaijan could replace Russia in EU energy market after EPC Summit in Chisinau

Chisinau, May 29. /MOLDPRES/- Recently, Azerbaijan has become one of the main countries through which Russian energy resources are replaced on the European market. The Romanian publication Newsweek writes about this today, which analyzes how Azerbaijan could replace Russia on the EU energy market after the European Political Community Summit, which is to be organized at the end of this week in Chisinau.

In 2022, the volume of gas deliveries from Azerbaijan to the European Union reached 12 billion cubic meters, and by 2027 Baku plans to double this figure.

Azerbaijan's role as a reliable supplier of energy resources not controlled by Russia has been noted by many other European leaders and international organizations. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said "Azerbaijan is a partner of major importance for Germany and the EU, and this country can make an important contribution to the diversification of energy supply in Germany and Europe."

At the same time, representatives of the European Commission said "Azerbaijan is a key partner for the EU in efforts to phase out fossil fuel from the Russian Federation." EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said that “Europe has emerged from this winter with half-full gas storage, more stable gas prices and a positive outlook for the coming winter. We have achieved this thanks to our reliable partners, such as Azerbaijan", concluded Kadri Simson.

Thanks to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan gas pipeline, the construction of which was supported by the US and Great Britain, Azerbaijan has had an oil transport route independent of the Kremlin since 2006. The presence of such an infrastructure is of decisive importance for Baku's independent energy policy in the interest of the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova will host on June 1 the European Political Community Summit, bringing together for the first time 50 presidents, prime ministers and senior European officials. The event will bring together 50 heads of state, prime ministers and European officials, who will discuss solutions to Europe's most pressing problems, such as peace, security and energy resilience.
