Chisinau, 1 June /MOLDPRES/ - The supervision flights by NATO aircrafts, of the AWACS type (radar), will contribute to the ensuring of the security of the Summit of the European Political Community (EPC Summit), held in Moldova. By overflying the air space of the Alliance, the AWACS NATO airships will secure the sky over the area where the Summit is held on the 31 May – 2 June.

„The aircrafts NATO AWACS can detect airships, missiles and drones from a distance of hundreds of kilometers, thus representing an important capacity of early warning,’’ the NATO’s spokeswoman, Oana Lungescu, said, noting that ‘’Moldova is a close and reliable partner of the NATO.’’

According to the NATO Liaison Office in Moldova, ‘’as a response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, NATO enhanced its air presence in the Eastern Europe with combat aircrafts, supervision aircrafts and cistern aircrafts.’’ The AWACS airships make regular patrols in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region, in order to watch the Russian aircrafts nearby NATO’s borders. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has 14 AWACS aircrafts, which are modified variants of Boeing 707. Flying at a height of about 10 km, a single AWACS can monitor the air space on an area of 400 km.

Also, NATO’s AWACS aircrafts regularly patrol the air space during major international events, including at the high-level NATO meetings. The most recent was the one held in Madrid in last June and other far-reaching events, such the international football championships or Olympic Games.

Moldova today hosts the EPC Summit, - an event in which over 50 heads of state, prime ministers and high-ranking European officials participate.
