Chisinau, 20 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- The state of emergency in the Republic of Moldova could be extended by 60 days, starting from October 2. Government approved a decision on the matter, under the decision of the Commission for Emergency Situations.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that currently "there is peace and tranquility" in the Republic of Moldova. "We have a secure environment for two reasons: the courage of Ukraine to continue fighting and the ability of the state institutions to use the tools granted by the Parliament by establishing the state of emergency so that we can continue our lives normally, businesses can develop. That's why we need the extension of the state of emergency, so that we can ensure a calm and peaceful environment in the Republic of Moldova", Recean said.

Minister of Internal Affairs Adrian Efros argued the need to set the state of emergency that "the risks for the security of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of the war in the neighboring state, remain relevant."

"Only a few kilometers separate the Republic of Moldova from some conflict zones, which makes it vulnerable to direct threats. At the same time, fragments of combat drones and missiles were detected on the territory of Romania and Bulgaria", said Efros.

The minister added that ahead of the cold season, there are significant risks that Russian forces will intensify missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, which could lead to disruption of electricity supply in our country, as happened in the previous cold season . "In this context, the extension of the state of emergency would allow the Government to take measures to ensure and strengthen the country's energy security", he said.

The document is to be presented to the Parliament for approval.

The last time, the state of emergency in the Republic of Moldova was extended by 60 days starting from August 3. The state of emergency in our country was established on February 24, 2022, with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
