Chisinau, 26 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- Academy of Sciences of Moldova (AȘM) came up with a call to the authorities to identify new opportunities for development in the research and innovation and to increase investments in scientific infrastructure. A letter to this effect, signed by AȘM head, academician Ion Tighineanu and Nobel Prize Laureate in Medicine Randy Schekman was addressed to the decision-makers in our country.

According to the authors of the letter, "with adequate financial support of science, career opportunities in research will be restored and young people will return home." "We hope that, on the eve of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, the decision-makers of the Republic of Moldova will dialogue with the academic community to identify distinct opportunities for development in the research and innovation. With adequate financial support for science, career opportunities in research will be restored and young people will return home. Experienced senior researchers engaged in the development of a knowledge-based society are ready to promote new leaders within scientific entities. A substantial increase in scientific infrastructure investment by the Republic of Moldova will certainly encourage additional philanthropic and non-governmental agency support from our friends in the West," the letter reads.

Ion Tighineanu and Randy Schekman said that the Republic of Moldova has the opportunity to go on the path of prosperity and sustainable development only if a new effort is taken to promote fundamental science, support scientists and turn to good account research results for the benefit of society.

The authors of the letter also say that Moldova is a small country that cannot compare with the decisive economies of Western Europe and North America, but, according to them, other small countries, such as Israel, are able to compete internationally thanks to a wise government investment in science infrastructure.

Nobel Prize laureate, Professor Randy Schekman of the University of California/Berkeley, United States of America, a world-renowned scientist in the of medicine paid a visit to our country on September 18-22. He was awarded the title of honorary member of the AȘM.
