Chisinau, 3 October /MOLDPRES/ - Those 14 laureates of the National Prize, For an Active Life at Any Age, have been awarded prizes by the Labour and Social Protection Ministry (MMPS). The winners received diplomas and money prizes at a solemn event held at the MMPS headquarters today.

The contest, National Prize, For an Active Life at Any Age, is organized in the context of the International Day of Older People, for the sixth year in a row. The goal of the contest is to encourage the active participation of elderly people in the society’s life and to recognize the merits and performances of seniors in diverse spheres of work. The prizewinners of the sixth edition of the contest made themselves conspicuous through achievements in the following sectors: science, education, civic activity, journalism, culture, art and sport.

Labour and Social Protection Minister Alexei Buzu conveyed a congratulatory message to the prizewinners for the success achieved. ‘’Today I want us to celebrate your activism, the wish to break the patterns, to show that to be an old person, including in Moldova, does not mean to isolate oneself, to be a person without initiative, who needs only support, but a person who contributes, in continuation, to the development of the society, who has a voice which is made heard and which matters. I know that you worked a lot, you edified this country, you fought for its independence and for its democratization and the minimal things which this government and my generation should do is to guarantee a decent and sustainable system of pensions. I assure that this is the goal No 1 which we assumed at this ministry and day after day, we make constant efforts to this end,’’ Alexei Buzu said.

Twenty eight files were submitted to the contest this year and the winners were nominated by a commission for examination, made up of representatives of MMPS and the civil society. As much as 80,000 lei (about 4,000 euros) was allocated from the state budget for the organization of the current edition. Eighty two candidates have received prizes since the first edition till present.
