European Commission recommends starting of negotiations on Moldova's accession to EU; Moldovan president says today important day for country's future

Chisinau, 8 November /MOLDPRES/ - The European Commission has recommended that the European Union member countries initiate the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to EU. President Maia Sandu today made statements to this effect, stressing that ‘’today is an important day for Moldova’s future.’’    

The official specified that this step was recognition of the joint effort of the state’s institutions, which work to transform the country, as well as of the citizens, who choose the peace, democracy and development.  

„The European Commission’s report confirms that Moldova in the last year has carried out serious reforms which prepared the country to become a European state and needed for improving the living of all citizens. The final decision on the starting of the negotiations with Moldova will be taken by the member states at the meeting of the European Council due on 14-15 December. The today’s decision of the European Commission encourages us and enhance our responsibility to continue the things started: to turn Moldova stronger, a state which ensures the peace at home and contributes to the regional security and takes care of the well-being of its citizens,’’ Maia Sandu said.    

The Moldovan president noted that the main goal was that Moldova should be ready to join EU till 2030. ‘’There is much work to do. The way which we have chosen to go is full of challenges. We are not scared by work and our objective is that Moldova is ready to join EU till 2030. A Moldova in the European Union is our only chance to guarantee a future of peace, freedom and prosperity for the entire country,’’ Maia Sandu said.      

In last June, Moldova received the status of country candidate for accession to the European Union. The Moldovan authorities were submitted nine conditions to switch to the next phase of accession – the one of negotiations. In last autumn, the level of carrying out of the European Union’s recommendations was assessed, succeeded by the decision on the starting of the negotiations on accession to EU.
