Chisinau, 21 March /MOLDPRES/ - The forests and innovations – new solutions for a better world is the 2024 year’s title of the International Day of Forests, traditionally marked on 21 March. The goal of this day is to enhance the degree of awareness about the problems of the sustainable management and conservation of forests for the benefit of the present and next generations, the EcoContact Association has reported.

Starting from February 2023, Moldova has a new national programme on the extension and rehabilitation of forests 2023-2032 (PNERP), approved by the government. Under the document, in the next ten years, the afforested areas will be extended by 150,000 hectares, both on new lands and on strongly degraded forest lands, state-owned or, for the first time ever, on private lands.

According to EcoContact, in 2023, the first year of PNERP’s implementation, the works of extension/rehabilitation were carried out on an area of more than 7,200 hectares.

Regeneration works are planned to be carried out on an area of at least 7,000 hectares this year.

„We urge you to join the national desideratum of the country’s afforestation, as well as to plant a tree upon each great achievement in your life. The benefits of trees are both for the environment and for the human health, but especially for the next generations,’’ EcoContact added.

The United Nations Organization in 2013 declared the day of 21 March as International Day of Forests.
