Chisinau, Aug. 31 /MOLDPRES/- Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița today sent a congratulatory message on Romanian Language Day, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

The message reads:

"There are few countries that celebrate the language they speak as we do. It is because, for years in a row, the citizens were deprived of it, and the return to the Latin script and the declaration of the Romanian language as the state language involved a fierce struggle. At a distance of over three decades from the National Liberation Movement, we speak our mother tongue without any fear, our children study in Romanian-language schools and we enjoy libraries full of Romanian books.

The Romanian language is the strongest identity element that defines us as a nation, that shows the world who we are and where we come from. It is spoken, written and sung by millions of people in all corners of the world.

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to some children from the diaspora, back home for the Diaspora Days events. They amazed and delighted me at the same time with a superb Romanian speech. Even if it was with a bit of an Italian, French or Jordanian accent, these young people and children strive to keep in touch with their heritage, even with their parents. Through the Romanian language, the diaspora children not only keep in touch with their grandparents and relatives from Moldova, they define their identity.

We are grateful to the generations of intellectuals who preserved and defended the Romanian language for their sacrifice, hard work and courage.

Let us honor them in our memory and thank those who continue to cultivate the love of the mother tongue with dignity.

Wherever our steps and life take us, wherever we hear the Romanian language being spoken, we always feel at home. And the best tribute we can pay to the Romanian language is to learn it, value it and speak it correctly!"
