Drone attack near Moldova border: two dead and two injured

Starokazacie border crossing point in Ukraine, located near the border with the Republic of Moldova, was attacked by a drone during the night of September 8–9. As a result of the attack, two civilians died and two others were injured. Operations at Tudora (Republic of Moldova)–Starokazacie (Ukraine) border crossing point have been suspended, the Border Police announced.

According to information provided by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the attack took place between 23:35 and 00:05. One drone attacked the crossing point, while two other unmanned aerial vehicles crashed nearby. All the aircraft fell on Ukrainian territory.

“At 01:45, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that, following the drone attack on the Starokazacie border crossing point, two civilians had died and two others had been injured. Their citizenship has not yet been established,” the Border Police said in a statement.

Following the attack, the infrastructure of the Ukrainian border crossing point was damaged, and the Starokazacie border crossing became non-operational.

The Border Police of the Republic of Moldova stated that, at 23:35, all persons present at the crossing point had been evacuated. Approximately five minutes later, a mobile Border Police patrol heard four explosions and observed the light from the explosions on Ukrainian territory, in the Tudora–Starokazacie direction. At that time, an air-raid alert was in effect on Ukrainian territory.

The Border Police announced that all procedural measures required by law had been taken on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. So far, no drone fragments or other objects posing risks to public safety have been identified in the border area on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

The Border Police, together with the other competent authorities, continues to monitor the situation and maintain contact with the authorities in Ukraine.

In this context, people who hear sounds characteristic of drones or explosions are urged to remain calm, take shelter in a safe place, and follow only information provided by the authorities.

People are also warned not to approach any possible aircraft debris, ammunition, or other unknown objects, and to immediately notify the authorities by calling the emergency number 112.

The Border Police stated that it will provide further information.
