Moldovan writer, translator commemorated at 100 years after birth

Chisinau, 27 April /MOLDPRES/ – A literary medal entitled "Un carturar si traducator contopit cu timpul sau. Centenar Vladimir Belistov (1918 – 2000)" (A scholar and translator fused with his time. Centenary Vladimir Belistov (1918 – 2000)) took place today at the Union of Writers of Moldova (USM).

In his speech, head of USM, Arcadie Suceveanu, mentioned that Vladimir Belistov was a reputable translator, very well known during the time he worked. "He knew Latin, Greek, German, and other languages. He translated from Aristophanes, Euripides, Homer, as well as many great ancient authors and contemporary universal literature," said Arcadie Suceveanu.

At her turn, writer Eugenia David said that alongside Igor Cretu, Pavel Starostin and Alexandru Cosmescu, Vladimir Belistov was one of our translators. "Like any translator, he had to write something original and wrote his novel "Doua surori" (Two sisters), which, unfortunately, could not be accepted at that time. It is worthy of appreciation that the National Literary Museum attempts to remove these translators from anonymous which worked under unfavorable conditions. Their books have remained in the Cyrillic script and, regretfully, they will not reach the wide reader today," said Eugenia David.

According to director of the National Literature Museum M. Kogalniceanu, Vasile Malanetschi, editorial, Vladimir Belistov debuted as a poet, his first book being a poem in lyrics for children entitled: "Rica Pierde – Vara" (Rica Lose – Summer), published in 1955, followed by volume: "Lauda de sine nu miroase-a bine" (Self – praise does not smell good). Talented and acquainted with several foreign languages ​​acquired during the pre-university studies, Vladimir Belistov did not hesitate to launch himself in the sphere of artistic translation, where he manifested himself plenary throughout the years that followed," said Vasile Malanetchi.

The publisher, translator and prose writer Vladimir Belistor was born on 22 April 1918 in Onesti village, Lapusna county. He graduated from the Theological Seminary in Chisinau, where he was Professor at Gala Galaction and the Faculty of Letters of the State Pedagogical University Ion Creanga. He died on 21 February 2000.
