EU to provide Moldova with two million euros for continuous initiation, training of policemen

Chisinau, 16 October /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union will provide Moldova with support worth two million euros for the continuous initiation and training of policemen. The money will be provided within a twinning project launched in Chisinau today.  

At the launch event, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko said that the project would be carried out with the support of experts from Lithuania and Poland, which are its partners.  

„The development of the community police is part of the Association Agenda. Moldova needs reforms dedicated to people. By this project, we want to bring the best European practices to the state institutions. The police must be in the service of citizens, must protect and help them. Thus, EU provides support to the Interior Ministry and the Police General Inspectorate in carrying out the reformation process. The experts from the two countries will provide assistance to work out a new curriculum for professional training for the police employees. The foreign specialists have a rich experience in the work with the community and law enforcement and are ready to share it with the colleagues from here,” Peter Michalko said.    

For his part, the state secretary in the sector of order and public security, prevention and combating criminality, Dorin Purice, said that this project represented an instrument of administrative cooperation for taking over good practices from abroad.    

„This project is meant to back the reformation of the police and is aimed at strengthening the rule of law state and at protecting the human rights through developing a modern police. The initiative sees elaboration of modern education programmes in the police system, which will be focused on practical work. We are happy that the experts from Poland and Lithuania will participate in this exchange of experience, which will positively influence the enhancement of the society’s trust in the police. I hope that this project will be a major support in the process of continuous initiation and training of policemen and the latter will prove maximum of dedication, responsibility and involvement,” Dorin Purice added.   

The EU Twinning Project, Reform of the initial and continuous training of the police system in Moldova, is to be carried out till 2021. In Moldova, the first twinning project was launched in 1998.
