Chisinau, 27 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) proposes to organize a referendum to cut the number of MPs in the legislative body on the day of parliamentary polls. PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc made statements to this effect at the end of the party’s weekly meeting today.

According to Plahotniuc, the number of lawmakers must be reduced from 101 at present to 61. Also, citizens should have possibility to withdraw the mandates of the MPs who disappointed them.

"I asked the lawmakers colleagues to prepare the parliament decision on holding the referendum, in order to be passed in the near future, so that the institutions dealing with the elections’ organization have time necessary to organize this plebiscite,” Plahotniuc noted.

The parliamentary elections were set for 24 February 2019 and will be held according to a mixed electoral system - the MPs are to be elected both on party lists and in electoral districts.
