Chisinau, 30 November /MOLDPRES/ – Parliament has approved today the decision to hold a referendum on the reduction of the number of MPs.

The initiative belongs to the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) and it was presented by MP Sergiu Sirbu.

According to the ruling, the referendum will take place on 24 February 2019, on the same day as the parliamentary elections. The citizens will have to answer two questions: if they "agree to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61" and if they agree that "people can revoke (remove) MPs if they do not properly fulfill their obligations".

The initiative to organise a referendum to reduce the number of MPs was announced at the beginning of the current week by the leader of PDM, Vlad Plahotniuc.

The parliamentary elections were set for 24 February 2019 and they will be held after a mixed electoral system, the MPs being elected both on party lists and in constituencies.
