Head of state says presidential elections prove that most voters are left-wing in Moldova

Chisinau, 2 November /MOLDPRES/ - The independent candidate, Igor Dodon, today made his first statement following the publication of the preliminary results of the 1 November elections. Dodon congratulated his counter-candidate Maia Sandu, noting that the ballot had proved once again that most voters backed the left and the centre-left parties in Moldova.

Igor Dodon, who participated in a meeting with Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii and Prime Minister Ion Chicu, said that, as of 3 November, he would repeatedly go on leave, in order to get involved in the campaign for the runoff, due on 15 November.

„I want to highlight the preservation of the general proportion of votes of the left electorate against the right one. Figures show that, together, the left-wing electorate has about 55-60 per cent of the votes and the rest belongs to the right-wing electorate. This distribution of political options has been maintained for more years and shows, almost each time, the result of the parliamentary or presidential elections from Moldova. I consider that this distribution of political forces will say its word also in the runoff of these polls, on 15 November,’’ Dodon said.

Dodon noted that, at this ballot, the Diaspora had been quite active. ‘’The Diaspora represents a parallel electorate with the one of Moldova and this electorate has its own vision and its own political liking and, to a great extent, these preferences are in dissonance with the preferences of the majority of the residents, who live and work in Moldova,’’ Dodon said.

Igor Dodon also said that, on 3 November, he would hold a detailed news briefing on the programme and steps he is to undertake for the runoff. ‘’The fact how the 1 November elections took place is an answer to those who were speaking about falsifications. I want to address to those former candidates to the office of president and it would be good for them to apologize to the state institutions and the citizens for the falsehoods they promoted in the last weeks, about falsifications and many other things. Secondly, I want to congratulate my counter-candidate for the fact that she had got in the runoff; in fact, the situation of four years ago repeats,’’ Dodon added.

Preliminary data by the Central Electoral Commission shows that, following the 1 November elections, two candidates, Maia Sandu and Igor Dodon, will compete in the runoff for the position of Moldova’s president.
