Chisinau, 2 April /MOLDPRES/ - The electoral campaign for the elections to the People’s Assembly from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauz-Yeri (APG), announced for 16 May, is suspended for the period of the state of emergency, decreed in Moldova between 1 April and 30 May, according to the executive committee from Comrat.

A decision to this effect was taken by the commission for emergency situations from the Gagauz autonomy (CSEG) on 1 April, given that emergency state was established in Moldova for 60 days, as well as following a request by the APG head, which asked for the explanation of the procedure of holding the elections in such circumstances.

The CSEG decision sees that the electoral commission from UTA Gagauz-Yeri will continue the electoral campaign once the emergency state is lifted. The Central Electoral Commission from Comrat will also have to nominate a new date of the ballot, as well as the terms of the electoral campaign, so that all electoral contenders are in fair conditions.

The People’s Assembly of UTA Gagauzia (Gagauziyanin Halk Toplușu) is the representative and legislative authority of the Autonomous Territorial Unit with special status Gagauz-Yeri, - a component part of Moldova. APG has 35 lawmakers, elected for a four-year mandate, in uninominal territorial districts, by universal, equal, direct, secret and freely expressed vote.
