Chisinau, 14 May /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu met today President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda in Chisinau, in an official ceremony, the presidential press service has reported.

The two heads of state had a tête-à-tête meeting, during which they discussed the latest political developments in our country, preparations for early parliamentary elections and the desire of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to build a prosperous future at home, without injustice and without corruption. Maia Sandu reviewed the country's reform agenda and the European agenda of the Republic of Moldova. In this context, the parties also discussed the challenges facing our country internally and externally - including the challenges in the region.

After the discussion, they took part in extended talks with members of the two delegations. Subsequently, the two heads of state held a joint press conference, during which they emphasized the special bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Lithuania.

Lithuania has always been a supporter of the democratic reform agenda in our country. Proof are also the 137 projects and technical assistance programs in various fields, financed from the taxes of Lithuanian citizens and carried out in the Republic of Moldova, in the last 12 years.

At the same time, Lithuania has always supported the European course of the Republic of Moldova. I can say with certainty that you are our trusted ally in Brussels, both in terms of collaboration in the context of the Eastern Partnership and in our direct dialogue with the European institutions.

We continue to count on Lithuania's support for the Agenda for the Association of the Republic of Moldova with the European Union, and for strengthening cooperation within the Eastern Partnership. In this sense, I reconfirm the openness of the Republic of Moldova to have a deeper relationship with the European Union ", said President Maia Sandu.

The Lithuanian president thanked the Republic of Moldova for being the first country to recognize Lithuania's independence in 1990. Gitanas Nauseda spoke about the need to deepen economic and trade relations between our countries, noting that the Lithuanian authorities will continue to support the Republic of Moldova in its European path.

"The Republic of Lithuania has come a long and important way. In 2004 we managed to join the European Union and we are full members. My presence in your country is a sign of support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, because it is a path that the citizens of the Republic of Lithuania also had ", said Gitanas Nauseda.

Gitanas Nauseda is on an official visit to Moldova at the invitation of Maia Sandu. This is the first visit of a Lithuanian head of state to our country in the last six years.
