Chisinau, 21 May /MOLDPRES/ - Works for construction and arrangement of the United Nations Alley, created on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Organization (UNO), started at the Chisinau-based Botanical Garden today. The initiative belongs to the Botanical Garden and is backed by the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM).

„The creation of the UN Alley, on the occasion of marking the 75th anniversary of the institution’s foundation, is a universal call to action for carrying out the Sustainable Development Goals, established till 2030. Moldova is member of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and therefore, we want to enhance the commitments contained in the updated Nationally Determined Contribution of Moldova, worked out in line with the provisions of the Paris Agreement. Thus, Moldova aligns its efforts to the international standards, in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions,’’ competent minister Ion Perju said.

„The marking of this anniversary in the Botanical Garden fits the event quite well, as this is a place where people come to reflect, to think about the past, as well as about a nicer future, which actually incorporates the United Nations’ principles. The planting of trees connects us to the next generations or I want to thank Moldova’s government and the country’s citizens for the fact that they share the UN’s ideals and aspirations,’’ UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Simon Springett said.

The UN Alley will be placed nearby the central entrance of the park and will replace the alley of birch trees, hit by the heavy snowfall from 19-21 April 2017, as well as in the wake of the hydrological drought of the last two years. In particular, oak trees will be planted on this alley.

The centre for development of energy policies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has launched an initiative titled, 75 trees for the 75 years of the UNO. The action is a support for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals till 2030 and namely goal 7: accessible and clean energy. All states party to UNFCCC, including Moldova, join this initiative, in order to strengthen their efforts internationally to cut the greenhouse gas emissions.
