Fines for illicit fishing might increase in Moldova

Chisinau, 17 March /MOLDPRES/ - The quantum of the compensations for the damage caused through fishing, commercialization, possession and illicit export of through the destruction of water biological resources in the fishing water objects might be increased. The parliament today approved a draft law to this effect in the first reading.   

The initiative was submitted by the head of the commission for environment and regional development, Elena Bodnarenco. She says that the fishes caught through illegal fishing, including the rare species from the Red Book, can permanently be found in municipal markets.  

Under the draft, the suggested values of compensations for the damage caused through fishing, commercialization, possession and illicit export or through the destruction of water biological resources have at their basis the categories of rarity, vulnerability, ecological and economic importance of species. The document includes 52 species of fish and the value of compensations due to be paid for each sample, no matter this size. The sum of compensations varies between 1,500 and 15,000 lei.  

Presently, the compensations for the damage caused to the water biological resources vary between 50 and 5,000 lei.
