Moldovan central electoral authority starts discussions on proposals of amending Electoral Code

Chisinau, 18 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) and the Promo-LEX Association have organized the first workshop of discussions on proposals of amending and improving the Electoral Code.  

The debates, held online, had the goal to work out a draft decision for improving the electoral procedures and implementing the recommendations formulated by national and international actors. Attending the meeting were the CEC members, Moldovan MPs, representatives of political parties, civil society, former electoral civil servants and foreign partners.   

The head of the Central Electoral Commission, Angelica Caraman, appreciated the interest and involvement of the people present at the event in the process of improving the Electoral Code and the related legislation. The official voiced confidence that ‘’the interest in this process will lead to the elaboration of a complex document, which will exclude the gaps existing in the present Electoral Code.’’     

According to the information unveiled by the electoral authority, four workshops of discussions are planned. The general vision of reforming the system of electoral bodies and the amendments suggested to this end were presented at the first discussion. The suggestions of amending the current Electoral Code regarded, in particular, the mandate, organization and work of the electoral commissions and the setting up and functioning of the hierarchically lower electoral bodies.  

Another subject discussed by the participants dealt with the improvement of the legal provisions concerning the peculiarities of the creation and work of the polling stations outside Moldova and for the voters from the left banks of Dniester.

The next subjects proposed for discussions will regard the procedures of nomination and registration of candidates and the regulation of the electoral campaign.
