Former Moldovan president detained

Chisinau, 24 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office has made public more details about the searches made in the file of the former head of state, Igor Dodon. Prosecutors informed that two persons had been detained following raids, among whom the former president of Moldova.     

At a news briefing, the acting chief prosecutor, Elena Cazacov, said that, today morning, law-enforcers had made searches at ten real estate units and three vehicles. They detected there large sums of money in Moldovan lei and in hard currency, contracts and receipts, as well as more luxury assets were raised for verifications.    

According to Cazacov, one of the two persons detained was found just when he tried to swallow a document. Also, prosecutors say that more illegally acquired assets had been hidden and 17,000 euros, 1,000 dollars, as well as 600,000 lei was detected in an envelope with the symbol of a political party in one of the locations. More package tours bought in Russian currency were among the evidence raised by law-enforcers.     

The searches were carried out within a criminal file opened against Igor Dodon, on the grounds of reasonable suspicion of committing the offence provided for in the Article 324 (passive corruption), Article 181/2 (acceptance of financing of the political party by a criminal organization), Article 337 (high treason) and Article 330/2 (illicit enrichment).
