Chisinau, 31 May /MOLDPRES/ - A meeting of the parliament speakers from the Nordic-Baltic States took place in Chisinau today. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu gave a speech at the end of the event.

“After a break of eight years, when such a meeting was held for the first time ever, I would dare to say that we witness a historical visit, especially in the regional context, in which we have found ourselves for three months already. I am grateful to you that you are here and that you are with Moldova in a moment when we need friends more than ever. Two events presently mark Moldova’s destiny and the life of our citizens: on the one hand, we have an unprovoked and groundless war at the border, which creates security risks and hit the perspectives of economic growth; on the other hand, Moldova submitted an application of accession to EU and sees the European integration as a national goal, which will bring more development, stability and democracy. Your today’s visit is meant to encourage both the authorities and the citizens, in a context when we need to be more united and more efficient than ever,’’ Grosu said.

The Moldovan parliament speaker informed that he had discussed with his counterparts the challenges and consequences of the war in Ukraine on Moldova, the priorities of the common agenda and the country’s European integration aspirations. ‘’We are one of the countries with the largest number of refugees related to the population; yet, this fact will not prevent us from continuing to be with the all those who flee the war. There are many challenges, as well as attempts of destabilization and any small support is important, so that Moldova is consolidated democratically and economically, just as the countries of the Eastern Europe did in the 1990s and 2000s. Thus, just to give an example, the opening of the markets of the countries you represent for the Moldovan products would be a direct and clear assistance for our entrepreneurs,’’ the parliament speaker stressed.

“Our small country has shown the entire world what a great heart it has. We proved that we are Europeans; that we just not only speak about the European values, but also act based on them. Therefore, on 3 March, we signed the application on accession to EU. We want to join the European Union and we will continue our approach with dignity and firmly. The European integration is Moldova’s country project,’’ Igor Grosu said.
