Food squander to be prevented, diminished in Moldova

Chisinau, 13 July /MOLDPRES/ - The food squander will be prevented and diminished and the quantity of waste generated by the entire food chain will be reduced through a mechanism approved by the cabinet today, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported. 

The draft’s goal is to ensure the transition to the circular economy, through the maintaining of food products in the consumption’s circulation and avoiding the formation of food waste. At the same time, the expenses related to the losses and squander of food will be diminished. In this respect, the redistribution of the surplus of food products will be encouraged, especially of those close to the deadline of the validity term.     

To reduce the food squander, operators in the food sector will sell at low or promotional prices the food products which are to expire or donate them to charity organizations or end consumers. 

To facilitate the establishment of contacts between food sector operators and the beneficiary organizations, the National Food Safety Agency will create and publish the list of beneficiary organizations on its webpage.   

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), annually one third of the world food production is squandered. Moldova, along with another 192 UN member states, committed to enforce the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which has 17 general goals, including the reduction of poverty and of starvation. The mechanism of preventing the food squander can contribute to the fulfillment of these goals to a great extent.
