Chisinau, 13 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- By 15 September employees of the territorial subdivisions of the Environmental Protection Inspectorate (IPM) participate in an event organized under the auspices of SELEC (Southeast European Law Enforcement Center) - TOX Regional Operation. The action is focused on the detection, investigation, control and analysis of crimes related to the illegal transportation of waste.
According to the IPM, as part of the operation, intense control raids are carried out throughout the territory of the Republic of Moldova, especially in the perimeter of the border line, in order to verify the legality of the cross-border transport of waste, using the information provided by colleagues from the Customs Service.
"It is obvious that contraventions related to waste, as part of environmental ones, have an international dimension. Illegal cross-border trafficking of waste generates significant income. In addition to financial costs, waste trafficking has an enormous impact on the environment and public/human health. As a result, the event aims to assess, analyze and share information on waste shipments, to improve risk analysis criteria, with a particular focus on detecting contraventions against the environment at national and regional levels, and to provide recommendations for implementation international practices", according to the cited source.
Regional Operation TOX is conducted under the auspices of SELECT, an international treaty-based law enforcement organization that supports its member states in preventing and combating serious and organized transnational crime, including environmental crime. In addition to the 11 member states (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary), SELECT has over 25 partner countries and organizations, both from the public sector, as well as private.
