Fines for drunk driving likely to increase

Chisinau, Dec. 1 /MOLDPRES/- The Ministry of Justice proposes to increase the fine for driving a vehicle while intoxicated.

Public consultations were held during which the initiative to amend some provisions of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Code was discussed.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the amendment refers to the modification of the provisions of the Criminal Code regarding driving the means of transport while intoxicated. Thus, it is proposed to increase the fine for the person who drives a vehicle, being in a state of advanced alcoholic intoxication or in a state of intoxication caused by drugs and/or other substances with similar effects. If currently the fine is from 350 to 500 conventional units (from 17,500 to 25,000 lei), after the amendment it could be from 500 to 1,000 conventional units (from 25,000 to 50,000 lei) or with unpaid work for the benefit of the community for a duration of 40 to 60 hours, or with contravention arrest for a term of up to 15 days. In all cases with the cancellation of the right to drive transport.

It is also proposed to increase the fine for the refusal, resistance or avoidance of the driver of the means of transport from alcohol testing and from the medical examination, in order to establish the state of intoxication and its nature or from the collection of biological samples within this medical examination. The person could be fined from 1000 to 1500 conventional units (from 50 000 to 75 000 lei) or with unpaid work for the benefit of the community for a duration of 50 to 60 hours, or with contravention arrest for a term of up to 15 days. In all cases with the cancellation of the right to drive transport.

The draft law will be adjusted and sent for approval, and later it will be finalized and sent to the Government for examination.
