Chisinau, 17 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has made a call to solidarity to all citizens to get involved in afforestation campaigns. The head of state made statements to this effect after the government today had approved the national programme on the extension and rehabilitation of forests for the 2023-2032 years.

„For our country, hit by droughts and other effects of the climate changes, the afforestation is a priority. The reestablishment of the areas of woods will improve the volume of water in rivers, lakes and wells, as well as the soils’ fertility and will reestablish the flora and fauna of Moldova,’’ President Maia Sandu said.

The head of state stressed that the carrying out of this programme demanded the involvement of the entire society. For this reason, the Moldovan president made a call to solidarity to young people, volunteers, non-governmental organizations and people from all Moldova’s settlements to get involved in campaigns of afforestation and collecting seeds, due to be announced by the authorities. ‘’I also call on the owners of public and private lands to participate in the afforestation process with their lands. With joint efforts, we can leave a greener country, a more hospitable living environment to the next generations,’’ President Maia Sandu added.

The national programme on afforestation, approved by the government today, provides for the extension of the area of forests by at least 145,000 hectares in Moldova in the next ten years. The project is financed from the state budget and development partners’ funds.
