Chisinau, 20 February /MOLDPRES/ - The tenth ordinary session of the European Parliamentary Assembly (Euronest PA), hosted by Moldova’s parliament for the first time ever, was inaugurated in the presence of President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola came up with a video message addressed to the participants in the meeting. In her speech, the EU official gave assurances that the European Parliament remained engaged in backing the Eastern Partnership. ‘’We are ready to support you as to your aspirations in relation with the European Union. We have room for the better; we have a lot to offer as regards the support of the democratic values, human rights and rule of law state,’’ Metsola said in her vide message.

President Maia Sandu said that today, brought together in Chisinau, we are united in our common vision of a peaceful, stable, prosperous and democratic Europe. ‘’We acknowledge that, to get to this vision, a renewed commitment was needed for the deepening of the cooperation and of the integration between the European Union and the Eastern Partnership countries, in a geopolitical context which poses unprecedented problems. We are here today, in order to share the same essential values – respect for the human rights, freedom, democracy and rule of law state, as well as common commitment to defend and maintain peace,’’ Sandu said.

In his speech, the parliament speaker said the event was an opportunity for Moldova to sum up the progress made and to consolidate the European choice.

Igor Grosu noted that Moldova felt that, on the last period, the EU member states, European Commission, European Parliament acted together to help the Moldovan citizens overcome all impediments. The speaker stressed that the country was grateful for everybody for the solidarity and support provided to the Moldovans.

The Euronest PA co-presidents, Ina Coseru and Andrius Kubilius, addressed the participants with greeting messages. MPs from Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine, as well as European Parliament members today will discuss the reports of the commissions for political affairs, European integration, energy security and social aspects.

The European Parliamentary Assembly was set up in Brussels in May 2011. At that time, the parliament speakers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and European Union signed the Assembly’s Foundation Document.
