Chisinau, 22 February /MOLDPRES/ - It is quite important that Moldova continues the work to fulfill those nine recommendations of the European Commission, in order to get to the phase of negotiations. Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Janis Mazeiks made statements to this effect at a news conference today.

The official stressed that the Moldovan government made much effort to carry out the recommendations. ‘’Five out of the nine recommendations regard the justice sector and the fight against corruption. There is a big volume of work which is to be carried out. We are happy that the country acts pragmatically on the problems identified and that it advances in implementing the reforms. The process of integration into EU lasts for years; things were like this in case of other states too. In continuation, it is necessary to analyze the national legislation, in order to see to what extent it meets the European one. At the same time, it is important to enhance the country’s capacity to protect its borders, maintain the domestic security, strengthen the defence system, consolidate the capacities of cyber protection and enhance the resilience,’’ Janis Mazeiks said.

The ambassador noted that he relied on a good cooperation with the Moldovan cabinet. ‘’We thank Natalia Gavrilita for the work and effort made, as she led the government on a period characterized by more crises. Last year, she proved us how important is that Moldova had chosen the way of European development. On 24 February this year, we mark one year since the unleashing of the war in Ukraine. Following the beginning of this unjustified war, the people of Moldova opened its hearts and homes for refugees. Thus, about 700,000 refugees crossed the country’s borders and about 100,000 remained here,’’ Janis Mazeiks said.

The head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau said that, in the context of one year since the starting of the war in Ukraine on 24 February, an exhibition had been organized. At the same time, on 24 February evening, the lights will be turned off at the headquarters of the EU Delegation in Chisinau, in order to commemorate the people who died on the war period.
