Moldovan foreign affairs minister pays working visit to Berlin

Chisinau, 29 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan diplomacy head, Nicu Popescu, paid a working visit to Berlin, Germany, on 27-29 March, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.   

During the visit to Berlin, the Moldovan official had meetings with more high-ranking officials, including German Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock. The sides discussed the process of Moldova’s accession to EU and Nicu Popescu thanked for the backing within the Moldova Support Platform. The concerned platform was launched at an initiative by Germany, Romania and France in April 2022 and the fourth edition of the Platform will be organized in Chisinau.    

Deputy PM Nicu Popescu and Germany’s State Minister for Europe and Climate Anna Lührmann discussed the progress made by the Moldovan authorities, in order to fulfill the European Commission’s recommendations and transpose the EU acquis into the national legislation. During a meeting with the head of the foreign policy committee of the German Bundestag, Michael Roth, and the adviser on foreign policy of the Federal Chancellor, Jens Plotner, Nicu Popescu stressed the importance of the inter-parliamentary cooperation between Moldova and Germany.   

In the context of the present regional security environment, Deputy PM Nicu Popescu had a meeting with the state secretary at the Defence Ministry, Siemtje Moller. The officials referred to the strengthening of the cooperation with Germany in the security and defence sector, ever more important role of Moldova as regional security partner, as well as to Moldova’s determination to actively participate in EU missions for peacekeeping and consolidation of international security.  

The president of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Norbert Lammert and Minister Nicu Popescu tackled subjects on the priorities of the Moldovan government’s foreign policy, carrying out of the reforms’ process and the German support to this end.   

In Berlin, Nicu Popescu took part with a presentation, hosted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). The Moldovan official touched upon the process of the country’s accession to the European Union, as well as how Moldova managed to cope with numerous hybrid attacks.

„I spoke also about the preparations for the organization of the second Summit of the European Political Community, due on 1 June 2023. The summit is an important diplomatic support for Moldova on a difficult period, as well as the expression of our commitment to contribute to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Europe,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu said.

Also, during the visit to Berlin, Nicu Popescu gave two interviews for Deutsche Welle and Reuters. During discussions, the official referred to the domestic situation and in the region.  

„I said that Moldova is not threatened militarily, but faces hybrid risks. Nevertheless, the authorities manage to keep the peace and stability, including due to the support provided by foreign partners,’’ Deputy PM Nicu Popescu added.
