Chisinau, 17 May /MOLDPRES/ - The members of the Alexandru Mosanu Historians’ Association from Moldova and a group of MPs from the first parliament of Moldova today held a news conference. At the event, they welcomed the initiative by President Maia Sandu to organize a National Assembly on 21 May 2023 and urged the citizens to participate in the assembly and ask for Moldova’s integration into the European area.

The deputy head of the aforementioned association, Ion Negrei, said that the association’s members expressed support for the assembly, which should emphasize Moldova’s affiliation not only with the European area, but also with the Romanian one. ‘’The assembly must express a national idea; we must integrate into the European area, from which were earlier torn off by the power from the east. At the same time, we must condemn the fact that Russia wages war in Ukraine and show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people, which defend us, as well as Europe. We deem as necessary the highlighting of our affiliation not only with the European area, but also with the Romanian one,’’ Negrei said.

A lawmaker from the first parliament, Alecu Renita, said that this assembly would make the citizens understand that the European integration was the engine of a democratic society. ‘’It is quite important that the document adopted at the assembly contains the guidelines in the integration process, just as the Declaration of Independence. The document must say good-bye to the Russian imperialism. Also, the participants in the assembly should condemn all forms of aggression from the post-Soviet area and, first of all, the terror to which Ukraine is subjected. We must decide for good not only the tightening of the security of the information space, but also its closing tight for the Russian propaganda. We must be on the Great National Assembly Square on 21 May and clearly say that we demand the integration into the EU area,’’ Renita noted.

The participants in the news conference specified that an initiative on the amendment of the Constitution, which must be adapted to the new conditions, should be launched at the 21 May Assembly.

In early last April, President Maia Sandu launched an initiative to summon the European Moldova National Assembly in the centre of the Moldovan capital on 21 May. The Assembly is apolitical and all citizens are expected to take part in the event. Pro-European rallies will take place also in another 33 citizens from abroad.
