Chisinau, Aug. 17 /MOLDPRES/- The European Commission announced that it will redirect 135 million euros to strengthen cooperation with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The funds were initially intended for programs with Russia and Belarus.

The funds come from the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument and had been allocated to the Interreg NEXT 2021-2027 programs with Russia and Belarus. As a result of the decision of the European Commission, the money is to be used for other Interreg programs with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, in the same period.

Commissioner for  Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira said "the decision to cancel the originally planned cooperation with Russia and Belarus through the Interreg programs is the result of Russia's brutal war against Ukraine".

According to a press release of the European Commission, the money will be used to finance various activities, such as the so-called "solidarity corridors", through which the EU helps Ukraine export its grain, the development of cross-border transport links, health services, education and social inclusion projects, as well as strengthening the institutional capacities of public authorities in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
