Eight current, former Moldovan lawmakers prosecuted by anticorruption prosecutors in 2023

Chisinau, 24 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA) in 2023 sent to court the files of more current and former officials, including of one former prime minister, former ministers and eight MPs. PA head Veronica Dragalin has made statements to this effect at a summing up conference.  

According to Dragalin, in the last year, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office achieved significant results, including: pronunciation of a final decision on conviction in the Bank Fraud file and sentencing of Ilan Shor to 15 years of imprisonment with the recovery of a damage worth 5.2 billion lei; pronunciation of a sentence of seven years of imprisonment against a judge; identification and sequestration of assets from abroad amounting to 80 million euros, in more criminal files with high impact; sending to court of another three criminal files in the Bank Fraud file, including causes concerning Vladimir Plahotniuc, with distraint worth over 1.2 billion lei; sending to court of other high-ranking subjects, among whom a former prime minister, former ministers and deputy minister; investigation and sending to court of multiple criminal files concerning the phenomenon of illegal financing of political parties and corruption in elections, in which over 10 million lei was raised.    

The PA head noted that, in the last years, Moldova had registered considerable progress in the prevention and combating of corruption, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) and even if PA faced more challenges, including legislative amendments, the staff of prosecutors continued to work and yield results in combating the corruption.  

Veronica Dragalin reviewed all achievements and pointed out the priorities for the 2024 year. She specified that ‘’PA will continue doing its utmost and use all resources, in order to diminish the corruption in Moldova, improve the citizens’ trust in the act of justice and the rule of law state, in order improve the living standards of all Moldova’s citizens.’’
