Moldovan president says referendum on European integration to define Moldova's present, future for next decades

Chisinau, 18 March /MOLDPRES/ - The referendum on European integration will define the present and future of Moldova for the next decades. President Maia Sandu today made statements to this effect at a news conference.  

The official stressed that, this year, Moldova would go through a turning point. ‘’I want everybody to be aware of the importance of this referendum, which is to be held in next autumn. We had more rounds of discussions on this referendum. The citizens said that they saw Moldova in the great European family. The European integration is a project of the people; therefore, the intention must be set forth by the people. The parliament is to initiate the process of organization of the referendum. All of us understand the benefits of the integration into EU. This country project unites the society and aims at ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future. The European integration is a historical opportunity. It is our chance for development and peace,’’ Maia Sandu said.      

The Moldovan president unveiled the advantages of the country’s European integration. ‘’It is about the guaranteed peace in the European Union, the enhancement of the welfare and the living standards, higher salaries and pensions, longer life expectancy, guaranteeing of the rule of law state, development of infrastructure projects,’’ Maia Sandu also said.     

Twenty rounds of discussions on the subject of referendum have taken place so far. Over 500 representatives of different communities and groups of the society participated in the discussions. The referendum might be organized in next autumn. The holding of this event was proposed by head of state Maia Sandu.
