Romanian president: Relations with Moldova remain extremely important for Romania’s foreign policy

Relations with the Republic of Moldova remain extremely important for Romania’s foreign policy, and Bucharest will continue to support the country’s European path and energy interconnection projects. Romania's President Nicușor Dan made the statements on the occasion of receiving at the Cotroceni Palace the heads of diplomatic missions, heads of consular offices and directors of Romanian cultural institutes, during the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy.

The Romanian official emphasized that Romania supports the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkan states.

“We support the integration process for Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkans, without deviating from the merit-based principle, and we welcome the opening of negotiation clusters for Moldova and Ukraine,” said Nicușor Dan.

He highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship with the Republic of Moldova and the progress made in implementing concrete projects.

“Relations with the Republic of Moldova remain extremely important for our foreign policy, and I am glad that we have made progress in concrete support measures, including energy interconnections with the Republic of Moldova,” Nicușor Dan added.

As for regional security, the Romanian head of state reaffirmed Bucharest’s support for Ukraine and for ending the war as quickly as possible.

“We want the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible and for solid peace to be achieved in the region. For this, we support Ukraine both bilaterally and in multilateral formats, and we support forms of pressure, especially economic, on Russia,” he said.

In conclusion, Nicușor Dan spoke about the need for closer cooperation between Romanian companies and Romanian diplomacy in order to capitalize on opportunities in foreign markets.

“As regards economic diplomacy, there are opportunities opening up with the treaties signed by the European Union with Mercosur, India, Indonesia, Australia and other important markets. So, in these areas, there will be opportunities and it is important to have a dialogue between Romanian state-owned companies, Romanian private companies and Romanian diplomacy, so that we can optimize both the presence of Romanian companies in these markets and the attraction of capital to Romania,” Nicușor Dan concluded.

The 2026 edition of the Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy is taking place in Bucharest from 31 August to 1 September, under the theme “Diplomacy: the anchor of a changing world”. The proceedings of the Meeting are chaired by the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu.

The event brings together the heads of Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices, members of the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of central executive institutions and of Parliament, as well as representatives of the business and academic communities. Members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Bucharest were also invited to the official opening.

The Annual Meeting of Romanian Diplomacy is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, close to Romanian Diplomacy Day, celebrated on 1 September. The event has become the main occasion for recognizing how Romanian diplomacy contributes to the significant processes that shape Romania’s development, as well as European and global developments.
