Moldovan foreign affairs minister meets Romanian counterpart

Moldova is counting on Romania’s support and expertise to advance its European Union accession process and is reaffirming its commitment to continuing the necessary reforms. Every step forward brings the two countries closer to their shared goal of being together in the European family. Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi today made statements to this effect during a meeting with his Romanian counterpart, Dan Neculaescu, in Bucharest.

The discussions focused on the priorities of the Moldovan-Romanian cooperation, expanding partnerships in areas of mutual interest, developments on Moldova’s European agenda and the regional security situation.

The officials welcomed the progress made by Moldova, as reflected in the Country Report presented by the European Commission as part of the annual Enlargement Package. Mihai Popsoi reiterated the firm determination of the Moldovan authorities to continue the reforms necessary for EU accession, in line with the objectives and timetable set out in the Roadmap, so that 25 negotiating chapters can be provisionally closed by the end of 2027.

The Moldovan foreign minister praised Romania’s constant support for advancing Moldova’s European path.

“The relationship between Moldova and Romania is a special one. The support provided over the years, even when we faced major crises, has mattered enormously to our country. We are also grateful for the assistance offered in modernizing communities, developing the education system and improving public services. We are convinced that together we can develop projects for the benefit of citizens on both banks of the Prut,” Mihai Popsoi said.

For his part, Minister Dan Neculaescu confirmed Romania’s support for Moldova’s European agenda, as well as its commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership. In the context, the sides discussed need to accelerate joint initiatives in infrastructure, transport, and energy, with the aim of improving connectivity between the two countries and Moldova’s access to European networks. These initiatives include the construction of highways and bridges, as well as electricity interconnection lines between the two countries.

Mihai Popsoi is visiting Bucharest, Romania, on November 5-6. During the visit, the official participated in the annual meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the Central European Initiative member states.
