President about drones found in Moldova: We need to invest in airspace protection capabilities
The Republic of Moldova must invest in airspace protection capabilities.
Head of State Maia Sandu made the statement, after a drone was detected today on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
“We need to invest in detection capabilities and in airspace protection capabilities. This is nothing new; Russia violates airspace not only in the case of the Republic of Moldova. The solutions are certainly not simple. I agree that merely expressing our position and condemning Russia is not enough, because Russia continues, both in relation to the Republic of Moldova and to other states, to violate airspace,” Maia Sandu stated at a press conference held today in Chișinău.
The head of state noted that the authorities will make efforts to identify the resources needed to strengthen the country’s airspace protection capacity.
“We will continue to strengthen our airspace protection capacity. It is not easy, because after this war started – Russia’s war against Ukraine – all countries are trying to purchase such equipment, and demand is higher than supply. Sometimes you have the resources but have nowhere to buy from, yet we are trying to identify both resources – because in our case resources are a problem – and manufacturers, so that we can strengthen airspace protection as quickly as possible,” Maia Sandu concluded.
A drone about 2.5 meters long was detected on Thursday morning, at around 09:25, in the garden of an uninhabited house in the locality of Crocmaz, Ștefan Vodă district. The object was reported by citizens, who alerted law enforcement. Experts from the Technical-Explosive Section went to the scene and are to examine the drone in detail to determine its origin and any potential risks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to this case and announced that the drone is of Russian origin. The institution described the incident as a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.
