Message of Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan after opening of negotiations on Cluster 6

The obligation of the authorities in Chișinău is to focus all efforts on opening the remaining negotiating chapters and signing the Accession Treaty with the European Union. This is the view of the prime minister-designate, Vasile Tofan, after the Republic of Moldova opened negotiations today in Brussels for Cluster 6 External Relations.

Vasile Tofan stressed that in just four years the Republic of Moldova managed to submit its application for EU membership, obtain candidate country status, host a European Political Community Summit, secure the Growth Plan, and participate in three Republic of Moldova–EU intergovernmental conferences.

These achievements were complemented today by the opening of negotiations for Cluster 6, “Common Commercial Policy” and “Common Foreign and Security Policy”, after Cluster 1 “Fundamental Values” was opened in June.

According to Vasile Tofan, “these results are due to the extraordinary efforts of the governments of the Republic of Moldova in recent years, of the institutions, as well as of the citizens’ determination to maintain the European course.”

“Our obligation is to focus all efforts on opening the remaining negotiating chapters and signing the Accession Treaty. We do not have the right to fail,” Vasile Tofan concluded.

The Republic of Moldova and the European Union today opened accession negotiations for Cluster 6 – “External Relations”, during the third Republic of Moldova–European Union Intergovernmental Conference held in Brussels.

The opening of Cluster 6 comes just one month after the start of negotiations for Cluster 1 – “Fundamental Values”, and the decision marks a new stage in the accession process. It confirms the advancement of negotiations based on progress made, sustained reforms, and mutual trust. Cluster 6 covers areas such as foreign, security and defence policy, as well as the European Union’s common commercial policy.
